The opening….

dscf1580At last . . . a weekend filled with sunshine, mild temperatures and a real sense that winter is finally over. Time to put away the heavy coats and boots and look forward to long summer evenings. Waking up in the morning becomes a pleasure with the sound of the dawn chorus outside the window. The drab browns of winter in Connemara are slowly replaced by a green backdrop to kaleidoscope of colour that comes with the summer flowers. In the woodlands, there are wood anemones, primroses, violets, celandines and bluebells. Early purple orchids will soon make their appearance.

My humble gardening efforts with my granddaughter, Aimee, are beginning to show a few results – the tomato and pepper seedlings are doing well. Aimee’s nasturtiums are establishing themselves, calendula are starting to germinate and my lettuce plants are looking splendid. But we have only just begun – lots of seeds still to be sown, a spot for the runner beans must be established, and we need lots more seed trays. In this time of financial constraint, growing vegetables and flowers from seed is both fun and useful, especially when you have a chatty, cheerful almost 3 year old to keep you company.

Welcome to Serendipity. This is my first post. I chose this name for my blog because it will cover all sorts of subjects and happenings that interest me. Some will be personal, others of more general interest.

I hope that this blog will help me to keep in touch with family, friends and people with similar interests.
